Lars Eighner- On Dumpster Diving
“On Dumpster Diving” by Lars Eighner details his and his dog’s lives while homeless. The story focusses largely on the fact Americans are so wasteful that often times the homeless, who are much less materialistic than people with disposable wealth, can survive quite easily from the wealthy’s “garbage.” Throughout Eighner’s story he mentions finding so much he often has to put things back or take only what he needs. Eighner states, “…even if I had a home with extensive storage space, I could not save everything that might be valuable...” (260). Eighner is stating he finds so much in dumpsters that even if he had a home he would not have enough space for what other people are calling garbage. Eighner shows the difference between the wealthy and the scavengers by stating, “A true scavenger hates to see good stuff go to waste, and what he cannot use he leaves in good condition in plain sight” (261).  It is apparent most employed Americans are prone to buying more than needed only to arrive eventually at throwing the goods out. The homeless, on the contrary, take only what they can use and leave what someone needs more than them.

Intro

Hello! My name is Whitney Kelley and I was born in Springfield, Missouri and have been living in Ozark since I was one. I am currently 19 years old. I live my boyfriend of over 2 years and our many, many colorful pets. I love all animals, of any shapes or sizes. Furry, scaley, feathery, or anything else. I have six dogs, two cats, a rabbit, and an wide array of fish. Currently, I'm trying to talk my boyfriend into letting me get a tarantula. They're just like puppies. Small and furry. Just with a few extra legs.

I'm not all about animals though. I'm at OTC trying to get my AA and transfer to MSU. It is my dream to teach high school art. I'm not sure which subject though. I love 3D and 2D art. Though sculpture and painting are more my strong points.

Along with being a fan of animals and art I also loving reading and watching movies. My favorite author and series is Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles.  I love all things horror. Nightmare on Elm st. and the Friday the 13th series are some of my favorites.

I might seem a little strange. But I promise I'm a very nice person. Just with some wacky hobbies and interests!

Got called in to work every day off this week. I'm sick of being called in. That's 7 times in the last three weeks. I don't know how Mindy hasn't been fired. I'm tired of this. Got fifteen more hours than scheduled this week. The money is nice, but I would like to actually be home. Almost didn't have time for homework because I was called in wednesday and thursday. My manager is too tired to care. he's quitting and getting disability so when I get called in I am the only employee since he spent the last two days taking a nap in the back office while I took orders at front counter, drive through, and made the food. I'm tired and worn down. I love my job, most of my co-workers, and the money I make. If I weren't being offered the managment postition soon, I would quit. I would love to have more time to see my boyfriend. He works a lot too. I can't wait until we move out and have our own place and don't have to share a place with my sister. She's very inconciderate. She watches tv until two or three in the morning sometimes. Very loud. I get no sleep. I hear her until late, wake up at 6:30, go to work. Work 8 hours, get off go to school. Go home, sleep, and get woken up when my sister is off work. I'm sick of this cycle. I want to be out. I want to run far, far away, and take my family with me. My boyfriend, Eric, my dogs, Molly and Moose, and my rabbit, Biscuit. I'm so tired all the time and no one realizes how many hours I put in a week. I'm supposed to be a part time worker and I got 56 hours last week. This week I will have 54. I'm so sick of this. When I'm done with school I can teach art and not be wasting my time in a dead end job with poor excuses for bosses. I can just paint, and sculpt and not worry about anything.
